About Kirtan

I fell in love with Kirtan following my first ever experience of it.

Kirtan is a form of devotional music rooted in the Bhakti tradition, where sacred mantras and the names of the divine are chanted together in a call-and-response format. Inspired by the Bhakti saints, who taught that devotion can be found through love, music and wholehearted surrender, Kirtan offers a beautiful way to connect with something deeper within ourselves.

You don’t need to be able to sing, know the words, or have any musical experience. There is no right or wrong way to join in... simply listen, repeat, and allow yourself to be part of the experience.

Kirtan can be a powerful practice for stillness, meditation and connection, creating a space where the mind can quieten and the heart can open.

How can Kirtan benefit me?

Kirtan combines rhythm, repetition, breath and group singing, creating a powerful effect on both the mind and body.

The repetitive nature of chanting gives the mind a simple point of focus, helping to quiet mental chatter and encourage a meditative state.

The rhythmic breathing involved can support relaxation and nervous-system regulation, while music and shared chanting can promote feelings of connection, calm and wellbeing.

You don’t need to be able to sing or have any musical experience.

Simply listening and joining in can be enough to experience the meditative and calming qualities of Kirtan.
